E-mails

i've had a number of ppl who kept asking me
'why do u have so many e-mails ?'
well here's the thing ,
my first e-mail was yusriya4@hotmail.com
and changed it to yusri_da_man@yahoo.com.my
and at a certain point i thought, wait, if i were to use this e-mail in my resume, and i would really look unprofessional
and if somebody asks me, hey, whats ur email ?
i would have to say it once, and spell it along with all the underscores
kan susah ? and unprofessional
haha
so i came up with these two :
yusri_jamal@yahoo.com
and
yusrijamaluddin@gmail.com
i'm guessing i'm gna be using the gmail in the future
coz gmail has a lot more functions than yahoo
face it, in two or three years, YOU GUYS are gonna start using gmail
and by gmail i mean googletalk (its kinda like ym only with a better voice message thingy)
so by the time u guys start using google talk, i'm one step ahead
just like i did with facebook, only that there were also someone else one or two steps ahead
haha
bt its not about that really

my point is, u guys should start making professional names
come on, xintherius ? pening ok boss nak eja
haha
my sister's is much more complicated
veiniesttea@yahoo
haha
thank god she followed her little brother's footsteps and started using gmail with a more 'professional' name
so go make a gmail or yahoo as long as its ID is professional
coz it matters when ur contacting clients or bosses in the future
its all about image
haha

Girls

there's this girl that has been messaging me in myspace for like a week or so
i dont even know who she is, she suddenly adds me with the intention of getting to noe me
and i did get to noe her for 3 or 4 messages bt thats it

and everyday (almost) i keep getting messages like i'm suddenly his boyfriend or what..
its like 'hey kenape tak balas comment ?'
'hey smalam tido awal ?'

i mean, what is it with these girls ???
sheesh, i just wanna live !
for a  moment ago i thought i want to noe stuffs and talk about stuffs with you.
maybe we'd share a common interest
now i wished that a moment ago i didnt have that thought.

apelahhhh...
i've got a girl who called me several times in taiping. similar situation
bt waayyyy funnier.
taknak cite. haha

got a nibble, i mean, four nibbles.

ho yeahh we're eating catfish for lunch !
this morning we went to our orchard (an infant orchard coz the trees are no larger than 3 feet)
and i took out dad's fish rod and my bro's super fishing kit from the US, and i caught 4 catfishes ! woohoo !
it was the first time i ever fished and finding a worm at our orchard was like finding oxygen in the air.
21%  worms in the soil. haha bengong
bt yeah, i just discovered the joy in catching fishes
the wait makes u enthusiastic, and just a pull of the string makes ur heart go double pedal (haha)
bt then when it pops from the water, u just feel like a man. haha
come on, what could be manlier than those arms pulling heavy fishes out of the water with a daniel craig face expression.. try watching that in slow-mo. haha

bt anyways, my bro sms-ed me and said 'finally i got to feel what drifting really is'
he wasnt at any comps or shows, he had an accident
he was on his way to our house when a car or sumthing hit him.. and the rest is out of my knowledge..
so the thing i was thinking was that, what if he didnt have breakfast yet, he'd be starving until he's done with all the accident procedures.
so i said to myself 'always eat breakfast over anything, u never noe what will happen'
haha, i noe hw ridiculous that is, bt its true, imagine urself being in jail somehow and u havent had breakfast
haha

so remember guys, always, ALWAYS eat breakfast over anything. hahahaha

Christmas enlightenment

my mom got a call from her host parent from the states yesterday. it was christmas so i guess it pretty much means a lot to contact ur loved ones.
and the part of the conversation that i wanted to highlight was this
she (a really old woman, she has grandchildren, u can guess her age) was talking about exchanging presents with her relatives
and she said that none of those presents matter anymore,in 10 years, i'm nt gonna use it ? so why bother ? i'm nt even sure i'm gonna be alive in 10 years
true. haha
and the interesting part is that she said that she's already started PACKING. putting stuffs into boxes.
i was like, WOAH ! haha
u noe the thing about her is that she's actually aware of her state and what's gonna happen
she accepts whats coming and prepares for it
if she were to be a muslim, i'm sure she'd be praying 24/7
well enuff about that

after the phone call, me and mom went to aqrab tilawah al-quran (or aqrab for short)
i usually come there at night on friday and mom goes there on thursday morning.
bt just to make things easier, lets just take the same class together

so, as usual, the session started with ustazah checking our yassinn
yeay me, i memorized 1-40 of yasiin! alhamdulillahh..
ok, so moving on, after we're halfway through talaqi (a very detail check of our recitations. with all the high note on Allah, rabb, and stuffs. quite different from normal tahsin like in tahfiz)
so, the makciks(everyone except me) were asked one by one to stand up and talk about how they find Al-Quran and started reading and coming to classes
i've heard the normal ones like after retirement, they just started to learn quran
some were trapped in a fortunate series of events, like this woman who has 6 children, and her husband had cancer, so she had to take care of her husband, and tried looking for a job to support her husband's medical needs.
out of nowhere she got to be an ustazah in a tahfiz
she had no qualifications or knowledge or wtsoever
so when her husband died, she continued to be an ustazah
she went to read quran from those kampung ustaz's
and eventually, found aqrab. and has been reading the quran since.
as a child, she was, like most of us, unreligious at first, never reads the quran, probly knew a thing or two about it, bt never really read the quran daily.

another story is about this other woman, who sent her son to aqrab and eventually, was given guidance from Allah to actually go there.
there's another 4 stories if u want me to elaborate
bt the thing they have in common is that, they all regret not learning the quran and practicing it at a young age, an age like us.
just because i think religion is the most important thing ever, it doesnt make me religious.

i know that most of you dont read the quran daily, or weekly, or monthly, or even yearly that is
the only thing that keeps most of us young people a muslim is agama from school and praying 5 times a day (maybe less)
do you even know the meanings of the words u recite in ur daily prayers ?
think about it
what kind of muslims are we ?
just a  page a day would do it, guys. read the quran, u dont even have to understand the meanings and u can get spiritual enlightenment.
i really dont know how to preach. bt i'm trying, really.
another thing about the quran is that it is really, really addictive
first you started reading a page a day, then u started to khatam  once a year, then u started to khatam a month in ramadhan, next u start to memorize it, and before u noe it, u've already memorized the whole quran, if u start early that is.. which is now.. at our age.

well here's a bit of experience of i wanted to share with you:
i was watching one of those akademi al-quran, and i was thinking, it would be so frikking cool if i can read like that (i dont even read the quran at that time), so one day my mom told me that she was going to a tarannum class and i was all, nak ikot nak ikot (i really dont noe why)
i was a form 1 at that time
so i did went to learn tarannum and i was a quarter to mastering tarannum and quit for some reasons
at the end of the year, my mom sent me to aqrab for holiday classes and i found usamah and rahimi there too. haha
and in class there was this guy who was really good. and i was all, god i want to read like that too !
and i continued with the class with my bro till he got a job and quit aqrab.
and out of nowhere my mom and i found another tarannum teacher, so i went to her house to learn.
from the early form 3 to pmr, i never really read the quran, i read it once or twice a month bt that wasnt really sufficient
the incident that sparked all the ' i want to learn quran and go to al-azhar!' was mrsm really
i wasnt really religious bt the timetable somehow forced me to read the quran after maghrib till 8.30, and more and more i became interested in learning more
i was one of the bilals at that time, probably because i knew tarannum, bt being the bilal was nt enuff for me really, in time i started to become an imam. which sparked everything that i am now.
ANYONE can become an imam, bt after loads of ceramah it became clear that to become an imam you have to know quran first.
it wasnt the enthusiasm of being an imam that really pushed me.. it was the responsibility of being one when u noe a lot about the quran
in taiping, candidates for imam is a handful, bt most of them were late to surau so i became imam for a number of times.
being best buds with the president of the bwp ( a very religious man ), i was constantly going to surau with him, we did 20 rakaat on tarawikh together after prep, we khatam the quran together during ramadhan.. well its true what they say, ur what ur frens are.
thinking about next year, there'll be no abg hafiz, no abg nawi, which also means we'll have no one to replace them
they were imams of imams, if they were there, the imam themselves would go back to their saf and let one of them to become an imam.
thinking about it, the responsibility falls on one of us now, the handful of candidates for imam
so i was thinking, if taiping was lead by an imam who noes a little, then the sin would fall on him.
whay if i was imam and i didnt now much about being one ?
so the pursue of knowledge started there, i started going to aqrab and learnt a lot about the quran

maybe you should too
coz its never too late really, bt its always too early for people who just DONT want to go.

being a muslim is not about wearing tudung, and being a muslim is not about praying 5 times a day, its not about reading the quran, its not about preaching, and its not about saying those two sentences,
its about understanding and practising ur beliefs, along with the MUST of doing the above mentioned.
and one thing, being a muslim is not about practising one thing and letting go of the other because its less important, everything in islam is important

bt hey.i may say all these bt i'm nt religious myself, i'm still trying, like what you should do.

Whose telling the truth ?

If everybody says their life is so complicated then who's telling the truth ?
the truth is ur life is not complicated, ITS LIFE, life is just life.
if everybody says that their life is complicated then complicated would mean boring
coz everyone has complicated lives remember ?
if everyone has it then its usual and boring. NOT complicated
so my life is as usual, life.

..

I'm guessing first day of school is gonna rock !
reasons :
  • we dont have our textbooks yet, probly going to get those by end of jan or feb
  • we havent bought our exercise books yet.
  • its the first day of form 5.
bt keeping in mind that these are taiping teachers, u never noe wut they have up their sleeves.
i'm predicting form 4 test papers for each subject..
AND they're gonna be collecting SOME homeworks. i dont trust that they can all remember. haha
bt the thing about getting my homeworks done is.
even if I DO finish it, then i would still be nagged at.
the whole class would be nagged so being in the nagged group even if ur nt the targeted ppl, it still feels like you are nagged. haha. bt yeah, sometimes i wonder, what the hush of getting it done if we're still gonna be nagged at

owh and the only homework i got done so far is sejarah folio which is typed (well duh, i use the pc 24/7 these days)
by the end of holiday : bioscore form 4 and 5 is predicted to finish, physics folio is also predicted
physics form 4 exercise book will be 1/2 finished.
and another 1/2 will be finished by the first night. and the next day i'll be sleeping while the teacher nags about ppl who didnt finish their homework. yippee !
i am so good at predictions. haha
bt insyaAllah.
cheerios

it hit me.

i've been thinking really deep on this and perhaps i would be the most passionate guy about english on the comittee
just nw i was talking to the ex-president of emc aka one of my closest senior since we debated together and walked to the dorm together at 2 in the morning after practice( HAHA, SOUNDS GAY )
HAHA.
well nt really, the only thing we have in common is the way we think
great minds do think alike.
i was asking about SEM coz he's probly the only one in my ym list who is actually done with SEM.
soon enough the conversation topic changed to emc
and he kept on talking about hw we dont have much activities la,
and i heard something familiar which is : 'ko kene tlong kengkawan english, kene tlg utk spm korang'
i was like, mmg lah, bt if im the only one with that in mind, ape nak jd with the rest ?
well the truth is ppl, our comittee is really messed up, the one thing about the comittee is that they keep coming up with lame activities
i wont say lame, more of something untargeted, with no objective, doesnt consider the students perspective, only what the comittee thinks, and what i reaaalllyy hate is that they dont consider every factors or as the president said what he nagged at me the other day,  'overthink'
bt that's just it, that's just what you guys are missing
being the son of a project management expert, my life revolves around getting a project done PERFECTLY. well true there's no perfect project bt you can have a perfect attempt bt nt a perfect outcome ( i just came out with that like, 10 seconds ago)
keys in an getting a successful project done perfectly :
  1. ALWAYS overthink
  2. consider the clients(users) point of view
  3. MUST ALWAYS HAVE A CLEAR OBJECTIVE
  4. good leadership
  5. a good team
  6. effectiveness (which leads to number 1)
  7. long term effect
  8. short term effect
  9. psychological effect (as in what ppl think about us)
  10. man power and resources
i'd like to emphasis on number 3
so about our comittee, we never really thought about objectives really
one time, we planned of doing a kopitiam session (interaction with students in class) by playing this game, which is : you stand on a piece of paper with a friend, then fold the paper into two, and do that over and over again without stepping out of the paper, the first team to step out of the paper loses

i was like wtf ?
and i stood up and said : so what is ur objective really
surely everyone went quiet and the guy said something in which i cant remember
so this proves hw much of a party planner we really are
u now what ? the english unit has made it clear that wtv we need, they can help
and seeing hw much english is not used in asrama (nt just verbal, but in literal means), the burden goes to us to change that.
fr me, its nt about literal english, its more to whether you can speak or not
this entry is probly to let out my frustrations.. seriously, what is wrong with u ppl ? i'm sorry if im being an egoistic jerk at the moment, but hey, ur the one with the fun ideas at the wrong place and the wrong time.

this goes to everyone here : wtv u do, no matter hw crazy it is, just think of why u are doing this
and hw many ppl are affected by it,

so the conversation with the dude continued
he goes on about E-nite and again, our activities.
and funny thing, he thought i ws president.. i didnt say anything coz it was a fantasy of mine a long time ago. so why ruin the moment ?
haha

to any EMCs reading this, dont take it personal, its I that needs a change in attitude but you're the one who needs a change in mindset. stop being shallow perhaps ?

wallahualam.

Women, start reading car mags.

listen to this one.

Things i wouldnt have learnt

as i was walking home from surau after being the last guy there (god its cool to walk around the surau in the dark), i was thinking, i would have never been in this state of mind if i DIDNT go to taiping (i said taiping, not boarding school)
but really, the farther i am from home, and the longer i spend my life in taiping, the more i appreciate how much of a haven it really is.
u guys might not feel it coz u live eat breathe home sweet home 7 days a week, and a few days away from home just dont make it the same as being in a boarding school for 40 days ok ?
haha
well, its like 15 days till i go back to taiping and i was thinking, god i love this place.
its not really the comfort of a tv, or a really fast broadband, air conditioning, comforters or the fun of having two WIIs at home, its really the comfort of knowing that u are secure, that it is a hiding place from almost everything. that all ur problems fade at home.
just about a year ago,  all i did everyday was come back home, eat in front of the tv, solat and sleep for about an hour or two, wake up and use the internet, dinner, internet sum more, homeworks and study till 1 or 2 am, and wake up the next day at 6, wait for the bus at 7. and i havent slept ONCE in class, maybe on a particular subject but nt regularly.

well here's my taiping schedule :
take a NICE cold shower, solat at the dorm, eat breakfast at 6.30, go to class at 6.40, pep talk(perhimpunan) at 7, class starts at 7.30,  we sleep in one or two classes per day(yes, WE. it would be a really good day if i havent slept in one class for the day). after school, go to surau at 2.30, eat and change (or take a shower if necessary) and go back to class for prep at 3.30. back to surau at 4.30, have hi-tea, go play basketball at 5.30,  back to dorm at 6.15, shower and eat at 6.50, go to surau at 7+, back to class for prep at 8.30, prep (or sleep), back to surau after prep at 10.15, sleep as soon as i reach my bed (normally 11+), wake up at 3, study or do homework, iron clothes at 5.15. and the whole thing repeats again.

u see how many things i can cross from the schedule if i'm at home ? it really is not about hw much stuffs i do in taiping, or how restricted the time is, its just about the freedom of doing it at ur own will. and doing it at the comfort of your own home.
and being away for 40 days every half a sem makes being home SOO MUCH SWEETER.

u see, in boarding schools, u really CANT have a best friend. seriously. i noe its weird, but u just feel the bond between everyone is  super adhesive. if ur walking with the same person everywhere, then ur definitely gay. seriously. haha.

another thing u cant learn at home is the 'WORKING' skills. we manage our own events, we become project managers, every post actually have things to do, and in cases, some of these ppl would do anything to give up their post, just because their so damn busy. being a debater and an EMC itself is SUPER-tiring. bahas ppl even stayed up till 5 just for the sake of practice.

i dont noe man, but the thing about me is that i really want to share with everyone what they've been missing so far (u can read my previous posts) and i turn out writing for paragraphs and paragraphs. haha.

i think im gna stop now, my train of thoughts just ended, i forgot why i really wanted to post this entry. haha
but seriously, u guys dont noe wut ur missing,
screw the spm results (its 10times easier to score straight A's in jess) ur still missing a whole lot. haha

A really awesome vid

this is exactly what i want to do if i am a millionare. besides the dancing part
and pause before u watch, its really awesome to watch the whole vid w/o waiting for it to buffer.

Dont mind the layout

i noe its sucks, but i'm only doing this so i can put my own header
the normal ones cant support customized headers like mine.
*under construction*

I Just Dont Know

Usually i'd have a resolution or a way out for things, or maybe just a reason for things happening
worst comes to worst, i'd make up my own excuses and reasons.
this time, I JUST DONT KNOW

50th post

*heavy applause*crowd cheer*fireworks!*
its my 50th POST!! woohoo !
go yusri ! go yusri ! haha
ok enuff of that.
first of all, i would like to say thank you to everyone who's reading this entry as i write,
to fazlin who converted me from xanga to blogspot like, 2 years ago. or is it last year ?
to my wardens who have been reading this and almost got me into JDM
to azie who made it possible for me to blog in taiping with her oh-so-awesome celcom broadband
to teachers who did a meeting to discuss about MY BLOG.
to friends who recently decided to register a blog (more bloggers, more readers)haha
to hamza andreas tzortzis who inspired MOST of my entries
to my pet cat who's probably sleeping at this very moment
HAHAHAHAHA

ok enuff of that
its not a real entry
i was thinking about posting a line or two.
bt what the heck kan..

okay ppl, in about 30 mins muneer's gna be pressing the doorbell and if i dont stop writing, i'll be going to UKM in kain pelikat. haha.

BFF outing.

yesterday me and hakim had a tour in KL
and so, we took a train bla bla and ended up at the klcc garden
it was a year since i last saw the map to rantai and all i remembered was that you need to get out of the park in order to get there
and yeah, we got out of the park bt hell we didnt get there
we ended up making a complete circle and finally got to 'the red bungalow'
it was like.. a deserted place with a crazy girl singing alone and a group of guys selling t-shirts to no one but themselves.
i was like.. whatt ?? THIS is rantai ?
and me and hakim looked at each other and just walked away from that gruesome site of rantai
so we walked to the cnvention hall to go to the pc fair (which is wayyy across the garden)
and took loads of phamplets and brochures. and i ws thinking, the recycling company could rilli make money with this much papers to recycle. haha. true.
all the way it was as crowded as hajj.. wayy crowded then my last convention.
but yeah, all i got was an effing keyboard (in which i am using, hehe)
i went to this booth to buy a card reader and the guy said. card reader seeemuuaaa habis dik.. semmmuuaaa jenis habis dik.
and i was like 'shit, sume org sangap card reader ke ape ?'
are card readers the IN thing these days ??? hahaha

moving on, we were like backpackers with no direction to go.
so eventually we went back to sentral and took a monorail to times
bought an IMAX ticket to watch THE DAY THE EARTH STOOD STILL
the movie was REAAALLLY ORIGINAL.
I MEAN REEEAALLYY ORIGINAL
u reeeaaallly need to watch it
when i was watching it i was like, woah how could he hv thought about this ??
its not like any alien invasion movie u've watched before
and keanu reeves was awesome. props to the director! (whoever you are).
but the ending was short. which makes it a little dull.

ok, so after the movie me and muscle-ached hakim went to this guitar shop blablablabla went back home, had subway bla bla.. went back home in a ktm train which was super-empty(i still cant believe my eyes).
but yeah, we had fun.

Where do you start ?

Sometimes its just so hard to get your point across
sometimes u got there bt you're misinterpreted.

i wish i could tell the whole world about what they've been missing.
i wish i could tell the people around me about what they've been doing wrong.
i wish i could stop thinking and fix what's in the mirror.

i wish i could do watever i think i should do. and not worry a thing.
i wish i could be like Hamza Andrea Tzortis.
amin.
http://hamzatzortzis.blogspot.com/

but the problem is..
where do you start ?

What about now ?

Found these on the net.

What about now ?

Looking Forward..

I'm reaally psyched to go back to school and END 2009
hoo yeaahh baby one year is gonna pass like that ... wooh
things that i reaaallly look forward to. i mean rreeaaally look forward to. haha :
  1. Post SPM. DEFINITELY. haha. god i'm gna mope around the house doin nothing for weeks.. then i'm gna start doin something useful. like arabic class, or go to darul quran. who noes, i might get a shot at al-azhar if i pass all those
  2. UIA debate. o yeah the bestest thing ever ! its like a total loss not to be able to join UIA for u guys. seriously, UIA debate rocks! livin the college life babe, late night snacks at the cafe, they have internet, we walk around the campus at midnight and hitch a ride from a total stranger. god UIA rocks.
  3. SPM. who wouldn't b excited about that? hahahaha.
  4. Minggu Bahasa debate. not rilli excited about that (hate the skipping class, being nagged by teachers.. blegh) im just excited to win taiping in nationals as we've done for the past... umm... i dont know.. for years. haha.
  5. EMC programs. o yeah i hv so many projects up my sleeve. its approved, only waiting for me to start aka launch. haha. and if all goes to plan, its gna start around the 2nd week.
  6. EMC selection. oh damn i'm gna make sure the form 4 EMC's get their own comittee. and a new vest. haha. dont ask me what happened .. haha.
  7. Raya. Ayus is graduating and coming back by raya and abg hafiz and abg fadhli will be going back to penang with us. the whole family back together. yeay :D
  8. Ayus. ayus is made as one point itself coz after she graduates, life wud be DIFFERENT for me . a new driver, a really nice sis, WASHBURN, washBURN, WASHburn, more and more outings (u noe how sis's like to go out like us.. and they have a car and a pocketload of cash)
  9. KTM to ipoh. yeah im gna try goin back home on a KTM
  10. Im also gna try goin back by the old harry potter-y train. haha.
screw the last 2 points. i dint have any idea of what to write. it just seems nice with the number 10. but yeah, i'm still gna try those..

Parents

i was just reading liyana aka liyanot's blog just now about parents and i ws thinking...
what's the use of saying 'i love my parents soo much !' if you dont really show your love.
i dont mean kissing them on the cheeks but as in, respect, acceptance, obeying them, ah you know, the stuffs that ustazah use to teach us.
but yeah, it really does matter for our parents that we respect them
i dont mean respect as in say please and thank you or bowing down when ur walking in front of them
by respect i mean, be the child that they wanted you to be.
at our age, we just want things to be done our way, we want to go out, they wont let us, so we argue to them bla bla.
that's just not how its suppose to be.
sure, they'd understand that ur an adolescent and its a norm
but cme on give them a break.
u just dont noe how much ur life can change just by listening to them.

but if we listen to them, life would be boring wudnt it ? i'd never go to gigs, i'd never go out with friends, i cant have a boyfriend, i cant go to any concerts, any midnight parties orr events. not even a play.
well true, but u jst dont noe hw happy u'll be once you stop doing those stuffs.
sure, ppl would understand
"dude, jom gg concert kat OU jom!"
"i cant, my mom wouldnt let me"
"okey"

i've been through a lot of those type of conversations and i've never been in one that made me feel like a total loser.
sure, deep down it sucks a bit not to have fun
but it rocks just to noe the fact that ur mom is not mad at you and that you've sacrificed for the greater good.haha, greater good.
but yeah, i've heard a lot of stories about how a child gets into misfortune just by nt listening/argueing with his/her mom.
its not science but its proven.

what do you mean by greater good ?
sure, u might not feel it now bt once ur on the right track, somehow all those problems are gone.
its either gone or solved.
not to brag or anything but i've been a total angel to my mom and i turn out ok
sure, i get to go out once or twice but its sufficient for now.
well until i get my own car/life. haha

Sultan: Don't harp on trivial issues

By WONG CHUN WAI

The Sultan of Selangor Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah, known as a person who speaks his mind, gives his views on several current issues – from the changing political scenario after March 8 to the recent fatwa on yoga.

ON POLITICS, THE SOCIAL CONTRACT AND TOLERANCE

Your Royal Highness, since the March 8 elections, Malaysia has seen a lot of changes in the political landscape. Selangor, for example, is now under the Pakatan Rakyat while many national political figures come from the state. What is your general impression on politics?

As a rule, I do not get involved in politics. I am expected to remain neutral and above politics and I am very conscious of this. But I wish to say that the expectations of Malaysians have increased. They want their elected representatives to be more mature and to have more depth.

For example, I am disturbed that some of our politicians, regardless of their political parties, prefer to dwell on trivial issues. They are harping on issues that have no relevance to the country. With the global economic crisis, I would expect them to focus their energy and resources on how best they could help Malaysians face this financial uncertainty. But the issues that these politicians have brought up are disappointing. I am concerned with the manner some politicians exploit racial issues for their own agenda.

Malaysia belongs to all races, not just the Malays. The country is what it is today because of the contributions of all races and that is something we must acknowledge.

I am concerned with the quality of some politicians. I hope the leaders will put some thought into grooming and succession. This is like a race. The baton must be passed to the best runner to finish the race. We are talking about the future of our children. They deserve the best leaders.

Tuanku, at the recent Conference of Rulers meeting, a statement was issued defending the country's social contract, stressing the need for Malays to be united and assuring non-Malays of their rights under the Federal Constitution. Was it at the initiative of Tuanku?

Yes, it was my initiative but it was made collectively following consultations with my brother Rulers. People need to understand that the social contract is a primary basis on the formation of Malaysia.

It has held the country together. The general principles have been accepted by all races. The country has been successful because of the spirit of give and take. Let's not debate it because it is better for the rakyat to understand the history behind the social contract and know how Malaysia's independence came into being.

The rights of the Malays are well protected, no one can just take away these rights and they cannot be amended without consent from the Conference of Rulers.

Malay unity is important. Any form of dispute – political or factional – is bad. As Rulers, we want to see the people, especially the country's largest ethnic group, to

be focused on more important things.

That was why after the last Rulers Conference, we came out with the statement that the non-Malays should not feel apprehensive over their rights. These are rights guaranteed under the federal and state Constitutions. We took great pains to ensure the statement was carefully worded, taking into account how sensitive this matter is.

ON YOGA AND FATWAS

Could Tuanku comment on the controversy surrounding the fatwa prohibiting Muslims from practising yoga?

State religious matters come under the jurisdiction of the Rulers. It is a state matter. In states with no Sultans, it is the King who decides. It is not the prerogative of the Mentri Besar or Chief Minister, let's be clear.

In the case of a fatwa, there are many steps to be taken before it can be gazetted. The state Fatwa Council, chaired by the Datuk Mufti, has to deliberate on such matters. Anyone can make proposals but finally, it is the Ruler who has the final say.

Islam is a beautiful religion. It is a practical religion. It must be known for its values and compassion. It is not about punishments or banning this or that. This has unfortunately happened. Islam is not about force. Substance is more important, let's not forget.

I noticed that in the case of the yoga issue, some people seemed eager to jump the gun by making announcements to show their authority when they have none. The result is confusion. Muslims and non-Muslims are confused.

An indepth and thorough study by the state Fatwa Council must be conducted before any decision is sent to me for approval.

ON APPOINTMENTS AND STATE AWARDS

Tuanku, recently there was controversy over the appointment of a non-Malay as acting general manager of the Selangor State Develop-ment Board (PKNS). What is your opinion?

I think it was a non-issue. The person has served in PKNS loyally and effectively for 30 years, so why should her promotion be questioned? If she's not good, she would have been sacked a long time ago.

Her job as acting general manager, which is only temporary, is only to ensure the smooth running of daily operations. She cannot make any decision that runs contrary to the objectives of PKNS, as raised by some quarters. The Mentri Besar is still the PKNS chairman and also the board will decide on policy matters.

Moreover, she would just be an acting general manager while the state government looks for a chief executive officer as replacement. The PKNS must function effectively while the search is continuing for a suitable candidate. I don't know why her appointment should be an issue.

Your Royal Highness, you have made it a point to limit the number of Datukships but the perception is that certain states have been over-generous in awarding these titles. Some feel that Datukships have lost their prestige.

I do not want to talk about other states. But as far as Selangor is concerned, there is a limit. It has been my practice to award fewer than 30 people Datukships even though the state limits it to 40. Only people who have contributed to the state or country deserve the title. It should not be given to any Tom, Dick or Harry. It should not be perceived that you can buy them. If that happens, or has happened, then those responsible must examine themselves.

This year, I have decided that only a few people would be awarded Datukship, two Dato Seri and one Dato Setia.

There would be no politicians, either from the past or present government. The present government is barely eight months old and it would need to prove itself first. Even a baby takes nine months to be born. We must give them enough time to show their work.

I am sure there are deserving cases in the present state government but let us wait first. Let them focus on their work, not awards or rewards. Titles should not come with positions.

As I said, I do not want to comment on the position of awards in other states but in Selangor, I wish to maintain its prestige and exclusiveness. It must be branded so people would value it and people would have high regard for the recipients.

BEHAVIOUR OF SELANGOR STATE ASSEMBLYMEN AT THE STATE ASSEMBLY

I understand that Tuanku has taken steps to check the behaviour and decorum of state assemblymen.

I have asked palace officials and even my brother to attend State Assembly meetings. I want them to report to me how these assemblymen, that means the state government and opposition, prepare themselves for these meetings. Do they know what they are talking about and have they done their homework? Are they taking part or just sitting quietly to observe the proceedings with no contribution.

This decision is not aimed at any particular party. It doesn't matter if they are in Pakatan or Barisan. If they behave badly or ignore decorum, I will have a word with them. This is not political interference. I repeat not political interference. I just want them to know they represent Selangor, so they should be at their best.

ON CRIME AND POLICING IN SELANGOR

Tuanku, crime has continued to be a major concern in Selangor which has the highest crime rate in this country.

I continue to receive complaints from the rakyat on the ground situation. I read about crime in the newspapers and even at dinner conversations. People talk about it. It's not just a Selangor problem but a national problem. In Selangor, we have the highest crime rate because the population is now the biggest in Malaysia. This is also a place which attracts outsiders and foreigners because of job opportunities. Social problems such as crime comes naturally unfortunately. It is expected.

I have been told that crime prevention has improved. The Selangor police are saying that this is their most successful period in the last 10 years with the state index showing a marginal increase. Gombak, Ampang, Shah Alam, Kuala Langat, Hulu Selangor and Sepang districts show decreases overall.

I am sure the police are trying their best but perceptions are important. If the public do not feel safe on the street or even at home, no amount of assurances would be good enough. Even the homes of police officers are burgled. That is bad. There should be more policemen on the streets. People feel safe when they see policemen on patrol. Traffic cops alone are not good enough.

What about the larger use of closed-circuit television (CCTV) in more parts of Selangor?

I am glad you asked that question. This has been bothering me for some time. I am in fact frustrated at the delay in implementing the CCTV project in Selangor. I had suggested this to the previous state government and now, we have a new state government. Nothing has happened, so excuses and more excuses.

The CCTV project has been successfully implemented in Subang but I do not understand what's holding it back from being implemented statewide by the state government.

There is no point having the best roads or best homes if people don't feel safe. In Britain, there are thousands and thousands of CCTVs being installed in strategic areas. I cannot understand this delay in Selangor.

Tuanku, what is your hope of the new state government which is now under Pakatan Rakyat?

There is much expectation and anticipation for sure. They were voted in by the rakyat. We have demonstrated that we believe in democracy and the new state government has been formed.

At the same time, we have to understand that the new government is also on a learning curve. However, Selangor is a developed state and the most important state in Malaysia, so the new government must understand the impatience of the people.

People expect them to know their job from day one. On that score, they must understand these demands.

For example, investors would not like it if there are delays in applications for projects. I also do not want them to complain to me that projects are being held up for no good reason.

What is your birthday wish?

It's simple. I like to see the people of all races live together in harmony. We have been able to do that for the last 50 years and even before independence and I believe the ordinary people love peace. What they want in life is simple – to live happily, have a decent life and see their children have a future in Malaysia.

I share their aspirations and I hope the politicians would also understand the need for this. Let us all adopt a give and take approach. Let there be consensus.

There is a need for more common sense. I hope the politicians will take note of this. If you have a degree from Oxford or Cambridge, it does not mean you have common sense and I have to stress that common sense is important.

I also wish to see less friction or less emphasis on trivialities. We tend to focus on trivial issues which serve no purpose.

Some people are quick to make judgments or quick to react without understanding a matter thoroughly or studying it in-depth first.
